Long Range Shooting Courses: Course Outline and Pricing

The introductory course on long range riflery is a two-day program offered primarily on Friday and Saturday. As of 2025, the cost is 420 dollars per person. We meet at 10:00 am and continue until around 3:15 PM. Keep in mind that the class duration may extend based on the number of participants and how quickly each individual meets the required objectives. In our introductory course, you will learn essential skills in long range riflery that will enable you to pursue further studies independently or to return for more in-depth private shooting clinics later. For those seeking personalized attention, our private shooting clinics offer one-on-one instruction at a rate of 380 dollars per day. Each day clinic lasts approximately 4 to 4.5 hours, beginning with classroom material. Many participants find it challenging to commit to a regular two-day class, making private day clinics an ideal option. In this format, you will build a foundational understanding of long range rifle techniques and data for target engagements (ensuring solid hits) out to 1000 yards. Private one-day classes are available on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. 

Pricing for private shooting clinics is as follows: 

1 person: 380 dollars 

2 persons: 320 dollars each 

3 persons: 280 dollars each 

4 persons: 260 dollars each 

(We usually prefer a maximum of 4 participants per private class but can make exceptions). 

We also offer private two-day classes that are scheduled from Monday through Wednesday on two consecutive days of your choice. The rate for these sessions depends on the number of participants in your group (usually double the rate for day clinics) and the time of year you plan to attend. 

Regarding inclement weather... 

Please understand that weather conditions can change, and we are prepared to conduct classes in rain or shine. We have a 20 x 25-foot shelter on-site, and as long as wind speeds remain below 20 MPH, we will proceed with the sessions. When reserving class dates, please be sure you plan to attend regardless of the weather. If severe weather conditions arise, we will cancel the class, refund your money, and reschedule for another date if you wish. Otherwise, we’ll be shooting! Remember our motto: "This ain't golf." 

Full two-day course schedule below... 

Day 1 (Friday) 

10:15 AM--CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION BLOCK: In this segment, you will gain an understanding of basic ballistics, muzzle velocity and trajectory, ballistic coefficient, and exterior ballistics. We will also cover essential wind reading techniques and a straightforward method for calculating windage values. Additionally, we will discuss the basics of rifle scope construction, proper sight picture (including parallax and crescent shadow issues), the importance of keeping the scope level during long range shooting, and tips for mounting the scope to the receiver. If requested, we will touch on simple modifications you can make to improve the accuracy of most bolt action rifles. MOA (minute of angle) and milliradian (mil) measurements will be discussed. Please take detailed notes during this session, as you may have questions later. 

11:20 AM--PROCEED TO THE FIRING LINE FOR SYSTEM PROVING: The initial accuracy standard will be 1.5 MOA or less (if you’re unfamiliar with MOA measurements, don’t worry; this will be explained in the classroom). If you and your rifle achieve 5-shot groups at 100 yards measuring no larger than 1.5 inches, you've reached the initial accuracy standard. You will chart your elevation range to ensure you can dial the scope to establish a 1000-yard zero for your rifle and load. If you are unable to meet the 1.5 MOA accuracy level or if your scope does not dial high enough for a 1000-yard zero, our instructors will evaluate your rifle and take necessary corrective measures. Be sure to bring at least 140 rounds of ammunition for the two-day course. If any accuracy issues arise, we will assist you with solutions. However, we do not expect systemic accuracy problems as you will have pre-verified your capabilities prior to attending the course. 

LUNCH BREAK: It’s advisable to bring a lunch with you. You can pack sandwiches or grab a cold meal from a local eatery before the class begins at 10:00 AM. Remember, we won’t stop for lunch! Bring plenty of water as well. 

If you have a canopy-type tent or sunshade chair, or even a large umbrella, these can be very beneficial during class. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent, a large bath towel, and trash bags in case of rain. A shooting mat or blanket will also be useful! 

At the range, we will continue evaluating individual sighting systems on each participant's rifle, determining the best strategies for employing scoped rifles for long range shooting. If your scope features repeatable turret adjustments, we’ll utilize that method for dialing distances for your long range shots. During this phase, we will compile a trajectory chart for your rifle and load. Shooters using reticle holds will learn to identify zeroed ranges at 100-yard increments up to 1000 yards, sketching their reticle and noting holdover points. Please remember, many from the more traditional backgrounds might dismiss this method, but it’s proven effective and can help you adjust. Our goal is to equip you with practical skills, and knowing fixed zero points with logged hold-offs can be beneficial if you ever use a scope that isn’t dial-friendly. 

End of Day 1: We will assess each shooter's performance and recorded data. This is the moment to clarify any lingering questions or resolve equipment issues. By the end of the first day, we should have data and wind call plans for every rifle extending out to 600 yards or further. 

Day 2 (Saturday) 

10:00 AM until approximately 11:30 AM--CLASSROOM: We will meet at the designated classroom area and review the lessons learned from Day 1. Much of the discussion and instruction during this session will stem from inquiries and topics that arose during the previous day’s range activities. In-depth information regarding handloading for optimal accuracy and basic modifications to enhance your rifle’s performance will be covered. We will also cover bullet spin drift and the Coriolis effect, plus discuss rifle and scope options for those considering upgrades. Angle shots will also be part of the curriculum. 

Again, ensure your lunch is prepared for the range following the morning classroom session. We will proceed directly to the range. Shooters will engage targets between 400 and 1200 yards, utilizing notes taken from Day 1. Spotters must stay alert to provide accurate shot calls for follow-up shots, given that near misses often happen in long range engagements.
